Right to Comfort part 2
From Robin DiAngelo, to Dana Brownlee, to Jenae Holloway, they have written about the notion of white fragility, uncomfortable truths, and the way comfort impede justice. I look back on the U.S. History from slavery to civil rights in the 60s and today’s Black Lives Matter movement and wonder, just how have things changed?
You can say that we have had progress because we have had a Black President and more Black people in leadership and accumulate wealth, but at the same time you look at Tamir Rice, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Duante Wright, and Adam Toledo as well as the response from people and all I see is the same thread of holding to comfort and scapegoating victims. Watching the defense’s case in the trial of Derek Chuavin you would think George Floyd was on trial as they lay out a retread of racist tropes and pseudo-science about Black men to defend the killing of George Floyd. It honestly feels like racism is on trial. If this defense wins the old tropes get new life. If found guilty, we can name and bury those tropes.
However, I still wonder if people are comfortable enough to name what is going on. I know my mental health suffers from this life long trial of racism. Racism having to be proven by a reasonable doubt only benefits the comfort of those that benefit from racism.
