The Great Law of Peace was plagiarized by Ben Franklin and the “founders” to create the U.S. Constitution. In it you had equity of voices between genders. Some oral history says this has been the case since some time in the 1500s.

While this was stolen to create the U.S., they missed a some vitals elements. One of the most important to me, was the lack of focus on we. The Great Law of Peace included everyone while the Constitution left out and narrowly focused on white males. Over the centuries, legal rulings affirmed this view. For example, Dred Scott denied the legality of Black citizenship. The 13th and 14th amendment overturned that decision.

However, people still pursued attacks to prevent to actualization of those amendments. We had laws and practices that betrayed those amendments and judges and justices uphold those laws and practices as legal in Plessy v Ferguson. Again, the denial dignity towards Blacks were codified legally. This wasn’t overturned for nearly 70 years.

It has been nearly 70 years since that court decision. The fight for dignity and recognition, that the long history of a mentality that dismissed human beings as people born with dignity and respect, rages on. Tactics continue to change from those that further the mindset that enabled this racist history proves that history is current. For many, they have no idea they further the racist mindset because the mode of operation is to not talk about and connect with any history that might make you feel bad about the U.S.

Acknowledgment of our continued failures does not have to lead to more negativity. The Great Law of Peace shows a way we can move forward. The best part is, structure of the Great Law of Peace me is built into the U.S. Constitution. On this July Fourth, I ask you to consider your actions to help us transform to a new age Great Law of Peace.
